Versatile Uses for Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a cap-shaped restoration that is traditionally placed over a tooth after it has been treated for damage or decay. Dental crowns are extremely versatile and can be used to:

  • Seal a tooth after it has undergone root canal treatment
  • Top a dental implant to replace a missing tooth
  • Conceal cosmetic imperfections, like chips, cracks, and discoloration
  • Securely anchor a traditional dental bridge

These single-tooth restorations are completely customized to fit your bite pattern, and blend in flawlessly with your surrounding teeth.

Placing Your Crown

At your first appointment, the decayed or damaged portions of your tooth will be gently removed. The remaining structure will then be prepared and shaped, forming a stable base for your restoration. Impressions will be taken of the tooth and sent to our trusted dental laboratory. You will typically be provided with a temporary restoration until your next visit. When your permanent restoration is ready, about two weeks later, you will return to our office to have your crown placed. Dr. Anderson will check the shape, shade, and fit of your crown. After making any slight adjustments, he will cement the crown securely into place.

Completing Your Smile with Dental Bridges

Dental bridges are designed to replace one or more consecutive missing teeth. A fixed dental bridge is comprised of one to three artificial teeth that are supported by dental crowns. These crowns are attached to the teeth adjacent to the missing teeth. In this way, the restoration literally bridges the gap in your smile. In some cases, Dr. Anderson may recommend a resin-bonded bridge, requiring no crowns, or a cantilever bridge, which only requires the crowning of a single, adjacent tooth.

Like crowns, bridges can also be retained by dental implants. Dental implants are tiny titanium posts which are surgically placed in the jawbone. Implants offer the strongest, most durable way to support your restorations. Moreover, implant-retained bridges do not rely on dental crowns and the alternation of healthy teeth.

The Dental Bridge Procedure

The dental bridge procedure is very similar to placing a dental crown. During your first visit, the natural teeth that will anchor your bridge will be prepped to support crowns. Dr. Anderson will take a highly detailed impression of your bite and send it to our skilled lab technicians. Once your customized bridge is fabricated, it will be placed at your second appointment. Dr. Anderson will use a specialized cement and precise bonding technique to affix the crowns and bridge, providing immediate functionality.
